June 25 News: A new report shows that nearly half of all smartphones sold in 2022 will be equipped with OLED panels, which signifies the increasing popularity of organic light-emitting diode display technology in the smartphone market.

According to a report by TrendForce, 39.8 percent of all smartphones sold this year are equipped with OLED panels. The report also predicts that 45 percent of the total number of mobile phones sold next year will be equipped with this type of display. The research and analysis company added that the wider adoption of AMOLED and OLED display technologies by major smartphone manufacturers such as Apple and Samsung is one of the main reasons for the significant increase in the share of OLED screen phones.
Nevertheless, the current supply of display driver ICs for OLED panels cannot keep up with the current high demand. The report added that these chipsets are relatively larger than other chips, so fewer numbers can be manufactured per wafer. Most display drivers use 40nm to 28nm processes for ICs. Up to now, there are only a few foundries like TSMC, Samsung Electronics, UMC and other companies that can manufacture ICs for OLED display drivers.
Among these chip manufacturing giants, only TSMC, Samsung and UMC can obtain enough wafers to manufacture display drivers. Although other foundries are currently developing the necessary process technologies, these must be completed before mass production can begin.
